Immediate contact with the environment, as well as the constant death of the upper layer of the epidermis, sweating and oily secretions require personal skin hygiene. Regular washing and bathing, clean and undamaged skin are an important factor in carrying out its main functions. Clothing is also important for the normal functioning of the skin - it should be made of natural materials and in accordance with climatic conditions.

The skin must be protected from burns. When a significant part of it is burned, death occurs. Sometimes it is a good environment for the development of microorganisms and fungi. Observance of personal hygiene reduces their prevalence. Infections with fungi (mycoses) occur when swimming in pools with polluted water, using common towels, clothes, shoes and more.
Frequent exposure to strong sunlight increases the risk of developing skin cancer.
Caring for the skin and its good appearance is of great importance for every person, or at least it should be. Regular skin care is important not only from a health point of view, given that the skin is the largest organ in the human body, but also from an aesthetic point of view. It is the skin that is the great traitor of our age (which we so diligently want to cover up or slow down). If we do not take proper care of her, she relentlessly betrays advancing age and the signs of aging.

When discussing the issue of skin hygiene (the word hygiene comes from the Greek word hygiainos - healthy), we must take into account several principles:

  1. Skin hygiene should be considered an integral part of an individual's overall hygiene. Hygiene of food, life, communication, bad habits affect the condition of our skin. It "eats" what we eat and naturally suffers from insufficient intake of important components, including vitamins and trace elements. Aggressive malnutrition diets often affect the skin first.
  2. The skin has different features in men and women. Until recently, men were neglected, with efforts focused on developing hygiene products primarily for women. Moreover, he was not looked upon favorably, or at best, there was a slight mockery of men who took care of their skin. Fortunately, such an understanding has evolved in a positive direction.
  3. The skin has different features in different parts of the body - on the palms and soles it is rougher, with a thickened stratum corneum, which reduces the chances of resorption. These are also the places with the highest concentration of sweat glands. The face, décolleté, shoulder girdle, back, hairy part of the head are rich in sebaceous glands and are referred to as seborrheic areas. Caring for them, especially in adolescence, should be very careful and different from that for the rest of the body, as these are the areas for the development of acne vulgaris.
  4. The skin has different requirements in different seasons - a sharp change of atmospheric influences - temperature, wind, moisture or overdrying, intense and prolonged sun exposure have the potential to damage it more easily, especially if it is not sufficiently protected. As the weather warms, more and more areas of the body remain exposed and directly affected by environmental factors. This means that when planning to stay outdoors for a long time, skin protection needs to be renewed more often.
  5. Diseased skin has different needs for healthy - topical treatment with active forms is limited in terms of frequency of application and area of application. This is not enough to maintain optimal recovery conditions. Complementing therapeutic regimens with adequate hygienic care contributes to speeding up the process and is an integral part of dermatology treatment.

In conclusion, we can emphasize that the skin is an extremely dynamic system, able to respond quickly to external and internal influences in both favorable and unfavorable directions. Knowing the mechanisms of its functioning and proper care help maintain the health of the whole organism.
